We've been quiet.  Very  quiet! I guess, with all things new, we have our hands FULL.  Which is a good thing right?  We had all the greatest intention to really start blogging full steam January 1st 2011 and start sharing with you ALL the many wonderful and exciting things bubbling in our minds.  Except, then we realized our website and blog needed changes  for both your and our benefit.  And like all things good, it is taking us way longer than expected.  So stay tuned.  We promise to be actively blogging again very very soon!

We not only HAD to get some Birthday decals for "Poppeliensie" but we also WANTED to. The joy and shrieks of pure pleasure when she helped decorate her play place last night was abundant.  Totally exhilirating.  Completely enthralled. 60.8% of all people in South Africa are living on less than $36 each per month.

21.6% of children between 0-9 years suffer from starving, 10% are underweight

Most children use pit latrines for toilets

24% of schools have no water in walking distance, an average one toilet per 20 learners, and 11.7% do not have any sanitation at all.

For the children who make up these statistics, these numbers translate into extreme hardship and real suffering. In their own words, poverty means:

“...the biggest problem is food. Sometimes we end up not getting any food at home… The other problem is to have school shoes.” (Boy, 15, Limpopo)

 “We need water. We get clean water once a month if the …. water ever comes.” (Boy, 17)

“I do not have parents. They are chasing us away where we are staying… we do not have money for food or …. for rent.” (Girl, 10)

• 27.6 % of school age girls are HIV positive (every hour, around 31 children die as a result of AIDS worldwide)

• Low school attendance is directly linked to empty stomachs.
• Without having a proper meal, it is almost impossible to concentrate during school and learn effectively.
• School meals contribute over the long term to combating poverty but it also helps to reduce disease
• Without the proper learning materials, students are even more hampered to perform well.

WE CAN CHANGE IT…..

•  Provide the school with vital materials and equipment
